If you are feeling emotional tension and stress, you may also find yourself experiencing overwhelm which is defined as having too much to do, being inundated, like you are on a sinking ship, swamped, crashing and burning and just simply unable to cope.
Now, some of us can be very sensitive to emotional tension, whether it is from situations we are currently experiencing in life, the thoughts we have about ourselves or others, the stories we tell ourselves about how worthy or unworthy we are, how loved or unloved we feel or by the to-do-list that we have of tasks piling up that we have to take actions around or a variety of other circumstances or events that are taking place in our lives. You can also feel overwhelmed when you don’t have much to do, when you are bored or when there is too much to do and when the mind is racing.
If you are experiencing emotional stress, tension and overwhelm then you may hold it in your physical body in your shoulders and neck in particular, you may find yourself telling stories from a place of fear that create limits, blocks and resistance in your energy, or you may feel exhausted, tired, emotional, you may withdraw, go quite because you are simply unable to cope with anything else coming into your space (physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually), you may find yourself looking for reassurance, acceptance or love from others, or you may slip into sabotage patterns that take you in the opposite direction from what it is that you are wanting and desiring to create in your life.
Now….let’s be really clear here, feeling emotions such as tension, stress and overwhelm are neither good nor bad, they are simply an energy that has been brought to the surface for you to witness, acknowledge and become conscious of so you are able to move them through your body and release them, then create changes and make decisions so you can bring in more love, joy, peace and happiness in your life.
What do you do when you find yourself in overwhelm? One of the simplest and most important things to do is, take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to come back to you, back into the moment, into the here and now because you are more than likely too focused on the past or the future. Once you feel yourself coming back into your body and the moment, give yourself the emotional comfort, nurturing, attention and love that you need to come back into a state of peace whether you meditate, take a nap, go for a walk, talk to a friend, have some fun or reflect on your priorities by asking yourself three simple questions:
What is it time to delegate?
What is it time to stop?
What is it time to finish?
By taking the time to ask yourself these questions, you are letting the Universe know that you are ready to take steps towards the new, you are inviting changes to come into your life, whether it is around your home, relationship, family, friends, finances, health and well-being or your spiritual development. You are also making yourself and your emotional well-being a priority, allowing yourself to take control of what feels loving, kind and peaceful for you which is just as important as your physically well-being.
